Suspect shot by Lee County Sheriff's deputy in I-75 confrontation
A Lee County Sheriff's Office deputy was involved in a shooting along Interstate 75 southbound near Luckett Road early Saturday morning. The suspect was wounded and taken to an area hospital.
I-75 southbound was shut down for several hours at Luckett Road with traffic diverted via Ortiz to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and back to I-75.
At an LCSO press conference at the Pilot gas station off I-75, Undersheriff Carmine Marceno said the incident happened around 3:30 a,m. and was reported via a 911 call by a citizen.
"At approximately 3:30 this [Saturday] morning the Lee County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call for service in the area of mile marker 139 on I-75," Marceno said. "Our deputy was immediately confronted by an armed subject with what appeared to be a semiautomatic pistol. Our deputy, fearing for her life and safety, immediately engaged the threat, subsequently firing her firearm, striking the subject."
Marceno said the subject was taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries. The deputy was unhurt in the confrontation.
The LCSO's major crimes unit is investigating the incident, he said.
Further details were not available.
I-75 southbound was to be shut down until the investigation was completed, officials said.
Another officer-involved shooting occurred Tuesday in Estero, when a detective shot a man who tried to evade arrest and hit the detective with his vehicle.
An additional officer-involved shooting was April 18 near the Coconut Point Mall in Estero. Prior to that, on Dec. 8, 2016, a Lee County deputy was shot at by a suspect who had just robbed a store in North Fort Myers. The suspect was not caught and the deputy was not hurt.
