The Lee County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of Ryan Farrell, a 17-year-old Cypress High School student who died over the weekend.

In a news release Tuesday, the sheriff's office said they began investigating an incident that occurred at the high school. The sheriff's office did not respond to questions about the incident. It is unknown when the incident occurred.

The cause of death is unknown.

Lauren Stillwell, spokeswoman for the School District of Lee County, said she can't comment on Farrell's death because the sheriff's office is investigating. When asked if the Lee County school district is investigating anything at the school related to Farrell's passing, Stillwell stated "not at this time."

Students at Cypress Lake High Center for the Arts created a memorial Monday for senior Ryan Farrell, who died over the weekend

Farrell's mother, Kathleen Farrell, declined to comment when reached by phone Tuesday afternoon. She asked that her family be allowed to grieve privately.

Farrell, a senior who was a sprinter and long jumper on the high school's track team, was excited to compete this season.

But instead, students left behind flowers, jerseys and artwork to memorialize him after his death.

At a Lee County school board meeting Tuesday night, School Board member Pamela LaRiviere, who offered the invocation, prayed for those in the "midst of grief."
