Panther road kill ups totals deaths to 34

An adult male Florida panther was hit and killed by a car Tuesday, marking the 34th documented death of the year.

This is the 26th road kill recorded by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the state agency in charge of wildlife management.

Other causes for death listed are: intraspecific aggression (panthers killing panthers) and unknown.

The cat was hit on Highway 27 in Highlands County, well north of Lake Okeechobee.

Male panthers are rare north of Okeechobee and the Caloosahatchee River.

Scientists say there are upwards of 180 or more panthers living in Florida.
