The man gunned down at his mother's home in Cape Coral on Monday was a former worker in the congressional campaign of April Freeman as well as a family friend of the candidate.

A police report on the homicide said Dayvin K. Johnson, 39, had run into the 1216 NE 23rd Terrace home of his mother and told her he had just been shot.

Further information on a possible motive or suspect in the city's fifth homicide was not available from police.

April Freeman, candidate for the 17th District of Congress, said that Johnson was not working on her current campaign but had been employed as a campaign worker previously.

"Our families were friends," she said. "I spoke with his mother. She is absolutely devastated."

The Cape Coral man was brought into the campaign in 2014, Freeman said, shortly after he performed a bit of political theater around Lee County.

Johnson and a friend, Frankie Affronti, picketed in front of media outlets, including the downtown offices of The News-Press, urging Congressman Curt Clawson to debate candidates including Freeman. Affronti was dressed in a chicken suit carrying a sign that suggested Clawson was afraid to debate.

That political theater performance brought him to the attention of the campaign, she said, and he was brought in as a paid worker.

Freeman said that some sort of fund would be set up for Johnson's family.

According to police:

Officers responded to the Johnson residence on NE 23 Terrace at 1:20 a.m. on a suspicious circumstances call.

When officers arrived they found Johnson dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Investigators determined the shooting was not a random incident and do not believe there is a danger to the public. The investigation is ongoing.

The five homicides are the most since 2008, when the city recorded seven killings. Last year there were no homicides recorded.
