Two dead in Estero crash identified

A driver and passenger were killed in a crash on Six L's Farm Road, south of Corkscrew Road in Estero

The two people who died and a third who suffered serious injuries in a single-vehicle crash on Six L's Farm Road in Estero last night have been identified.

Renan Ruiz Torres, 23, of South Carolina and Regino Ponce, age not provided, of Guatemala died in the crash, according to a Monday afternoon Florida Highway Patrol statement. Jose Hernandez, 35, also of Guatemala, was identified as the injured passenger.

The crash happened around 10:41 p.m. The vehicle, a Ford Explorer, was heading north on Six L's Farm Road when, for unknown reasons, it went off the road and struck 2 sets of wooden fences. The SUV overturned and struck a tree before coming to a stop.

Two passengers were ejected from the vehicle, troopers say. One of the passengers was pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver who was still entrapped behind the steering wheel was also pronounced dead.

The surviving passenger was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
