Twenty people and four Lee County students were present during a press conference over concerns school board members may rescind their vote to opt out of Florida Standards testing.

Bob Schaeffer, public education director with FairTest, said rescinding the decision would be cataclysmic.

"There should be a need for a plan for the board to move forward," Schaeffer said.

One education advocate said parents need to come together and continue voicing their opinions about standardized testing.

"This district is capable of this fight," Kathleen Jasper, with Conversation Ed, said.

Parents were also vocal that Tuesday's meeting at 8:30 a.m. should be moved later in the day to allow teachers, parents and students to be present for the vote.

"If they want to change their minds — fine," said Shaeffer. "But they have to do it in front of the people who voted them in."

"A lot of media reports are saying that these are the consequences," Tess Brennan, a member of opt out of Lee County. "There aren't any consequences laid out anywhere."

Parents want to know why board member Mary Fischer has decided to change her mind.

Parent Jacqueline Tauber said she called and spoke with Fischer who told her she had new information.

"I asked her why she did not collect the necessary information before making a decision," Tauber said.

A member of congressman Curt Clawson's staff is at the press conference to gather information and report back to Clawson.
