Chaos in Cape Coral: 3 dead after shootings
Cape Coral police shot and killed a gunman suspected of killing two others minutes earlier along two busy roads Sunday evening.
"It's shocking," said Sgt. Dana Coston, police spokesman, at a news conference.
Coston said the shooter, who has not been named, was armed and "violently resisting officers" when they confronted him, but no officers were injured.
Coston said he will not be identifying those involved Sunday night nor releasing additional details but said more information will be released Monday morning. Cape Coral police were at the scenes late and rerouted traffic on some of the city's biggest roads.
He said the average number of homicides per year for Cape Coral is five; so far this year, there had been one homicide.
How it started
Events started about 5:45 p.m. when the suspect shot and killed a motorcyclist at Skyline and 26th Street Southwest.
When The News-Press arrived, a body bag was visible next to a blue-and-white motorcycle lying on its side in the roadway.
From there, the suspect went to the Circle K in the 1600 block of Cape Coral Parkway about 6:30 p.m. There, the suspect shot one person to death and injured another.
Four minutes later, police stopped the suspect's car in the 5100 block of Skyline Boulevard. That's when the suspect resisted officers and was shot.
Two passengers in the vehicle were injured in the shooting and taken to a hospital. Police could not confirm if those two were shot by officers or the gunman.

Coston wouldn't go into detail as to how the officer-involved shooting took place, but he said officers "acted accordingly."
"This is a unique circumstance, a very tragic circumstance," Coston said.

Coston, in law enforcement about 20 years, said Sunday night is not one he'll forget.
"There are certain days that stick out in your mind, and this will definitely be one of those for me," he said.
