Gov. Rick Scott and the state's hospitals may have a rocky relationship these days, but that didn't stop him from awarding Cape Coral Hospital the state's highest award this week for performance and management excellence.

Cape Coral Hospital is the first community hospital in Florida to receive the Governor's Sterling Award.

"It is through the dedication of our entire team that we are able to achieve the level of excellence required to receive this award, said Scott Kashman, the hospital's chief administrative officer in a written statement announcing the award.

The 291-bed hospital is one of four acute-care health centers operated by the publicly run Lee Memorial Health System. The hospital's services include a special care unit for newborns, a wellness/fitness center and award-winning stroke care.

Sterling Awards are based on a variety of criteria, including leadership, strategic planning, operations, customer focus and workforce focus.

Other award winners are: The City of Tallahassee Underground Utilities; the Florida Department of Health in St. Johns County; Kids Central, Inc.; the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections; the Orange County Public Schools Human Resources Division; and the Tax Collector for Polk County.
